EAN-128/GS1-128

Previously referred to as UCC/EAN-128 or EAN-128
It was developed to provide a worldwide format and standard for exchanging common data between companies.
It not only encodes the data, but also what that data represents.
For example in a value like XX850, the XX will tell it's format, like it's a time, a price, a weight, etc and the 850 the value.
